In this paper we present ultrasound imaging velocimetry (UIV) measurements and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the flow of a water clay mixture in a prototypical pipeline system component: a 90 degree pipe bend. The background of the research are so-called future sanitation systems, where water usage is more efficient than in conventional sanitation systems due to the increased concentration of the domestic slurry and local (in the neighborhood) recovery of useful constituents from the domestic slurry is promoted. For the design of these networks, knowledge of the flow of these, typically non-Newtonian, fluids with a finite yield stress is needed, see Thota Radakrishnan et al. (2018). As a starting point, we compare the mentioned flow observations and simulations of a water-clay mixture in a pipe bend. We are interested in the quality of the characterization of this complex, non-optically accessible flow, that can be obtained via UIV measurements and LES simulations, their agreement, the performance of the present implementation of LES for the relevant non-Newtonian fluid and other possible modelling effects in the LES. The last point of interest that will be touched upon is the recovery of the velocity profile downstream of the bend. Experimental and numerical analysis of the pressure losses in the bend will be performed at a later stage.
